How To Change Spokes On A Bicycle
Spokes are the metal parts on a bicycle that support the wheels’ tire and act as a steering system. These metal parts are extremely important to the functioning of a bicycle; without them, a bicycle would have no movement and would be completely inoperable. Mechanics use spoke wrenches to repair bicycle spoke issues. Bicycle spoke problems can make riding difficult or even dangerous.
A bicycle’s spokes hold the wheels in place. Mechanics use spoke wrenches to repair bicycle spoke issues. Bicycle spoke problems can make riding difficult or even dangerous. A bicycle with poorly positioned spokes would move forward but would be impossible to steer. On the other hand, one with well-positioned spokes would be able to move forward easily and with precision control. Fortunately, fixing a bent or worn-down bicycle spoke is easy and requires only a few supplies, such as a screwdriver and oil.
Spokes are connected to the hub of the wheel by metal rings. These rings connect the outermost points of the spokes; these points have an angled bend at the end that allows them to contact the rim of the tire. A wrench is used to tighten the outermost points of a spoke when repairing it. Mechanics use spoke wrenches to repair bicycle spoke issues, which makes it easy to fix a bent or worn-down spoke by tightening its connection point with one tool. Bicycle spokes are prone to problems that can prevent them from performing their designated task- steering a bicycle’s wheels. The most common problem with bicycle spokes is a bent or worn-down inner hub screw. When this is left unchecked, it prevents proper steering and can cause serious injury or death to riders as they ride through uneven terrain. In extreme cases, riders may even lose control of their vehicles and crash them into cars or people. To avoid this kind of disaster, riders should inspect their bicycles’ wheels for loose screws every so often and have them repaired immediately.

With more than 30 years in the bicycle industry, I have a strong background in bicycle retailing, sales, marketing and customer service. I have a passion for cycling and a dedication to excellence. As a manager, I worked diligently to increase my capabilities and responsibilities, managing up to eleven mechanics (at Palo Alto Bicycles) and later as a working partner in my own store.
As the shop owner of Spoke n’ Word Cycles in Socorro, NM, the success of the mission was my responsibility, which I pursued passionately since we opened in 2003 through the spring of 2011. I am adept at managing owned and loan inventory, preparing weekly & annual inventory statements, and managing staff. The role as managing partner also allowed me tremendous freedom. I used this personal freedom to become more deeply involved in my own advancement as a mechanic, to spearhead local trail building, and advocating for cycling both locally and regionally.
As a mechanic, I have several years doing neutral support, experience as a team mechanic, and experience supporting local rides, races, club events. I consistently strive to ensure that bicycles function flawlessly by foreseeing issues and working with the riders, soigners, coaches and other mechanics. Even with decades of experience as a shop mechanic and team mechanic, and continue to pursue greater involvement in this sport as a US Pro Mechanic, and UCI Pro Mechanic.
